Loving An Addict
If someone you know and love is battling addiction, and you are finding it challenging to have faith that God will turn the situation around. Take a moment to read about how that same God made a way for his people when it seemed like all hope was lost.
Loving an addict isn’t easy and nothing is quite as painful as watching a loved one suffer. You may feel as though they are too far gone. Your every attempt to help them feels as though it’s in vain, you’ve tried everything, but nothing seems to help stop the addiction from controlling your loved one. Well, now that you’ve tried things your way, it’s time to move out of the way, and hand your loved one and their situation over to God.
Amid the chaos, panic, and worry addiction can bring, we can easily fall into the habit of putting our faith in man, rather than God. “That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God”. (1 Corinthians 2:5)KJV. No matter how difficult or hopeless the situation may seem, nothing is too difficult for God. Loving an addict can be a battle in and of itself, which is why we need to stand strong in our faith. The best thing you can do for this person is to get on your knees and pray. Addiction is a spiritual problem, therefore we need a spiritual solution.
Exodus Chapter 14 is a wonderful reminder of God’s magnificent power. The Israelites were fleeing Egypt and the Pharaoh who enslaved them, during their escape they approached a dead end at the Red Sea. Trapped, with the sea in front of them and Pharaoh’s army quickly approaching behind them, the Israelites were terrified. With incredible faith, Moses told the people of Israel, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand where you are and watch, and you will see the wonderful way the Lord will rescue you today. The Egyptians you are looking at—you will never see them again. The Lord will fight for you, and you won’t need to lift a finger!” (Exodus 14:13-14)TLB.
The angel of God who was leading the Israelites during their journey went behind the Israelites and was in the midst of the Egyptian army and the people of Israel. “And that night, as it changed to a pillar of fire, it gave darkness to the Egyptians, but light to the people of Israel. So the Egyptians couldn’t find the Israelis. Meanwhile, Moses stretched his rod over the sea, and the Lord opened up a path through the sea, with walls of water on each side; and a strong east wind blew all that night, drying the sea bottom. So the people of Israel walked through the sea on dry ground! Then the Egyptians followed them between the walls of water along the bottom of the sea—all of Pharaoh’s horses, chariots, and horsemen”. (Exodus 14:19-23)TLB.
God didn’t just part the sea to allow the Israelites to escape Pharaoh’s army, he also ensured that their enemy would be defeated once and for all. “When all the Israelites were on the other side, the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand again over the sea, so that the waters will come back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” Moses did, and the sea returned to normal beneath the morning light. The Egyptians tried to flee, but the Lord drowned them in the sea. The water covered the path and the chariots and horsemen. And of all the army of Pharaoh that chased after Israel through the sea, not one remained alive”.(Exodus 14:26-28)TLB.
Just as God guided Moses and the Israelites, God will also guide you through your journey of loving an addict. He can and will make a way in your situation, much like he did when he parted the Red Sea for the people of Israel to allow them an escape from Pharaoh’s army.
