Paranormal Investigating: Are You Bringing Home Demonic Spirits?
Are paranormal investigators ghost hunting spirits of the dead or demonic spirits?
On YouTube, you can find any video on any topic. The amount of content on this platform has reached an all-time high. With that being said, sometimes I will watch a video and be prompted by the Holy Spirit to comment whatever he places on my heart. Oddly enough, I started to recognize a pattern of prompting whenever someone was “ghost hunting” and messing in the realm of the paranormal. Mainly when they use the name of Jesus, when they are scared, yet continue in chasing “ghosts”.
The name of Jesus isn’t some magical incantation
Let’s get one thing straight. The name of Jesus is not some magic word anyone can pull out and expect divine protection while continually sinning against God. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that a non-believer can’t call out the name of Jesus and experience his power. I absolutely believe that can and will happen. The defining factor is whether the person calling out the name of Jesus is doing it from a sincere heart or using it as some magical incantation.
Okay, I’m getting ahead of myself let me back up a bit. Though the examples of this are plentiful, I will use the most recent video I saw as an example. I will not call out any of the YouTube channels, I’m just going to refer to what took place.
Last night the video I saw was of a couple going to a “haunted” hotspot hoping to capture evidence of the paranormal. This building used to be a bar but is now closed and being used for ghost hunting tours. As this couple walked around with a spirit box (which supposedly translates entities’ voices into phrases), strange things started happening. Talking coming through the spirit box, problems with their electronics (i.e. cell phones, cameras), unexplained noises and the overall feeling of dread.
Once activity began to pick up, fear intensified, and the guy began throwing around the name of Jesus. I’m just going to sum up what he said as he spoke to this “entity”.
“You are not allowed to touch me, get away from me and you can not follow me home in Jesus’ Name!” He then told his girlfriend he made sure he packed sage and protection crystals along with Holy water. This man then said, “Before we leave, we should say a prayer, light the sage and use the crystals.”
The biblical view of ghost-hunting and demonic spirits
I believe this is a multi-faceted issue that I notice a lot in the paranormal, ghost hunting community. I try to go back to before I was saved and remember what my views were on similar matters, in hopes of understanding their view. With that in mind, I searched through scripture to see what the Bible had to say about it.
First, I think we need to breakdown what ghost hunting and paranormal investigating is. That way, we can compare and contrast it to scripture. Every paranormal investigator is different, so I will break it down into two groups and examine if both groups fall in line with what scripture says we are to avoid. The first group will be the paranormal investigators that use conduits as a means for communication with entities.
Paranormal investigators that use different mechanisms to capture evidence or assist them in an investigation. Consisting of any of the following:
Spirit boxes, EVP, binary response devices
Ouija Board
Magic, spells, enchantments, charming
Divination
Mediums, spiritism, necromancy, familiar spirits
Wizardry
Seances
Channeling, clairvoyance, spirit-guides
Paranormal investigators that do not use any sources to capture evidence or aid them in an investigation. Usually consists of:
Speaking or calling out to ask questions and communicate
Seeking a personal paranormal experience
Forbidden By God?
The first group is the investigators that bring with them all sorts of devices and tools. Possibly bringing along a psychic/medium with them on an investigation to gain some understanding and increase communication. These ghost hunters will sometimes try to solicit a response by bringing a Ouija Board with them or other haunted/cursed objects. By reading the verse below in Deuteronomy 18:9-12, we can clearly see that these types of things are strictly forbidden by God.
“When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
What about the second group of investigators? These are the ghost hunters that desire a more organic experience. Not taking any devices or aids along on their investigation. Using what they already have, their ability to communicate using their words. Most people would say, out of the two groups this type of investigating is okay to do, but the individuals who believe that would be wrong. See, whether you are bringing devices with you, you are still seeking communication. God forbids his people from all involvement with the occult because it is the easiest and fastest way to open the door to Satan and his demons into your life. By pursuing these things, you are giving demons a legal right to wreak havoc in your life. Therefore, people will claim something followed them home after investigating a place. They would be right, but it’s not a spirit of a human who has passed on, it is a demonic entity. People are often deceived by the belief that there are two types of spirits, demonic spirits, and a good human spirits. I’m here to inform you that there are only Satan and his demons masquerading as ghosts on these investigations.
Ghosts of Dead People?
I cannot speak on this topic without mentioning ghosts. Whether it be the ghost of a loved one or just any random person. This is where people struggle in their minds with the deception Satan has blinded them with. The Bible tells us we cannot communicate with the dead; they are asleep. How then are people communicating with their dead loved ones? To put it brutally, they are not. Usually, people’s response to this is to point out that this ghost knew things only that loved one would know. Satan and his demons have been on this earth for an incredibly long time and in that time have determined the best ways to deceive humans. They do this a number of ways, one of those ways is through familiar spirits.
Familiar Spirits
What is a familiar spirit? Familiar spirits are in reference to demons. These familiar spirits are the demons that work with sorcerers, fortune tellers, necromancers, etc. Today, it is most frequently referred to as a spirit guide. Often deceiving even the person working with them into believing they are an angel, a higher being, ancient gods, and the list continues on. This has become very popular with the rise of New Age practices and meditation. People believe they are communicating with “enlightened ones” through meditation, but it’s in fact demonic spirits.
These demons work their demonic powers to aid the mediums they are engaging with. Through lying signs and wonders, the demons deceive not solely the person working with them, but the ones who seek their “abilities”. A familiar spirit can likewise be a reference to the demons that are associated with any individual. In our day-to-day life, we come into contact with demons and their influence on us. These demons are always around attempting to deceive and lead individuals into giving them legal rights into their lives. When a person goes to see a medium to have a seance to commune with a deceased loved one, these familiar spirits work in tandem with the medium’s familiar spirits. Demons that have contact with you whether you were aware of it, give the demons working with the medium whatever information is desired. This is how demons deceive people into believing they are the ghost of their dead loved ones. Feeding information back and forth to keep up with their elaborate illusion.
Why are demons willing to go so far and work so hard to deceive people into believing they are their dead loved ones? I believe the two central reasons are; to get you to entertain them, which gives them the legal rights they require to further their agenda and to ensure that an individual continually takes part in these occult practices. Remember, Satan’s whole objective is to keep you from knowing God and dragging as many souls down with him. Yes, Satan knows the Bible better than most Christians, therefore he knows that God views those practices as an abomination. Which keeps you in unrepented repeated sin, separating you from God, and keeping you from an eternity with God.
Demons are constantly studying humanity, searching to further their agenda. Something I see repeatedly in the paranormal world is demons masquerading as spirits of children. It is much more profitable for them to impersonate to be a child. It is more likely a person will entertain what they suppose is a spirit of a child or their dead loved one than some just any random “spirit”. Remember, Satan is the father of lies, which is just one reason you shouldn’t believe anything he or his demons say. Yes, they can operate in facts and truth, but rest assured it will always be convoluted with a lie. I heard it said before, that when people lie they often mix in a bit of truth to make the lie believable. You see this in recorded police interrogation videos, the investigators are aware of this and will examine the false account the criminal is telling as a blueprint to lead them to the actual events that took place.
Takeaway
I know that many people who are reading this will immediately come against what is being told to them. Humanity has found comfort and relief in the idea that when a loved one passes on there remains a way to interact with them. Mankind does not like death and its permanence, which is why they are constantly seeking ways to extend their life, or even reach immortality. A Holy Spirit-filled believer will not view death as a permanent ending, rather a beginning to eternity with our Heavenly Father. Some people make the choice to continue to believe in the lie they tell themselves about their loved one’s spirit remaining accessible after death. Because it is easier than accepting the truth. In doing this you are not allowing yourself to grow in the truth that God has so graciously given us through his word. I did not come up with this on my own; I am relaying what the Bible clearly states. Instead of coming against me, take it up with God. If you find that you are struggling with what you have read today, you should examine yourself to understand why you are reacting in the way that you are. When people come against what is in God’s word, more often than not it is an unclean spirit operating within an individual that is causing them to reject the truth, in turn rejecting God.
